Established in 1831,
Acworth was part of the Cherokee Nation. The town received its name from Joseph L. Gregg, who was an engineer and named it after his hometown, Acworth in New Hampshire.
Acworth was officially incorporated in 1860 and became a city part of Cobb County in Georgia. The estimated population in Acworth sits at around 22,818, with a total area of about 9.79 square miles.
The city also has some unincorporated areas which extend to Borrow, Cherokee, and Paulding counties.
The area is often referred to as "the Lake City" thanks to its positioning near Lake Allatoona and Lake Acworth. The city of Acworth is governed by a
5-member Board of Aldermen and a mayor, each serving four-year terms and five-year terms, respectively.
The Cobb County School District oversees public education in Acworth. The city provides residents with many recreational activities, many of which are held outdoors to leverage the area's natural beauty. Acworth also has many restaurants, festivals, and major attractions that offer residents a high quality of life and get the attention of many visitors every year.
One of the main areas in Acworth that attract both residents and tourists is the Historic Downtown. This area holds a variety of dining and shopping options, as well as boutiques and galleries that feature local art.
