Powder Springs is a city in Cobb County, Georgia. It was initially incorporated as Springville in 1838. The first settlers arrived in this area searching for gold as Georgia had discovered gold ten years prior. Springville was later renamed Powder Springs in 1859, taking inspiration from the seven springs located within the city limits. The water of these springs held over 20 minerals that turned surrounding sand black, which greatly resembled gunpowder.
The city, located in southwestern Cobb County, is around 22 miles from Downtown Atlanta. Powder Springs has an area of about 7.2 square miles, 0.17% of which is water. The city has approximately 16,887 people, and the median household income is around $56,486.
The city's rapid growth led to the Department of
Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs in 2017. The department's goal is to create opportunities for the community to engage, promote sports, and support cultural growth. Powder Springs has enjoyed a surge in local activities and events thanks to this department.
Citizen involvement is a priority of the city of Powder Springs. To this end, the city has created many boards, commissions, and programs designed to encourage residents to participate in the community. Some examples include the
Downtown Development Authority, the
Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission, the Seven Springs Historical Society, and the
