Why is Greece a great place to visit in retirement?
If You are Going to Touch Your Retirement Funds, It’d Better Be for Good Weather
Athens barely sees any rain throughout the year. While you are guaranteed to get wet in many places around the globe during Spring and Fall, Greece is the perfect place to visit during those seasons. On average, Athens receives approximately 335 days of full sunshine each year, as opposed to 110 days in Atlanta, GA. We all know that cold and rainy days can ruin a trip, especially when you plan to walk around and explore new sights. In Greece, the chances of that happening are very slim.
More Bang for Your Buck
Enjoying life in retirement is important, but you should always stay within your retirement budget. Athens is a great place to go to because, despite its recent spike in popularity, it is still one of the most affordable capitals in Europe. Compared to London, Athens is on average 50% cheaper to live in and visit. You can find modern Airbnbs or American hotel chains, for incredibly affordable prices. For a random date in May 2024, you can find four-star hotel rooms in Athens for an average of $150 per night. However, in London, a hotel room with similar standards is going for an average of $300 per night. Considering that accommodations are not the only expense in a trip, eating well at a mid-range restaurant (with drinks) will cost you around $50 for two people, which is similar to what you would spend eating out in the US.
Enjoy the Mediterranean Food
Aside from its exquisite flavors, you have probably also heard of the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet, which consists of grains, salads, fresh vegetables, seafood, some red meat, and lots of olive oil. Studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet is an effective agent in preventing cardiovascular and heart diseases such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. If you feel like your diet could use some improvement, what better way to do it than getting inspiration from the source and bringing all those ideas back with you to your kitchen?
