How will a potential government shutdown affect your portfolio?

There is potentially another government shutdown coming on March 1, 2024. If this does take place, keep in mind it is only temporary. Your favorite National Park might be closed or you might not be able to get things from the government if you’re a government contractor. In the end, businesses continue to run, people keep going to restaurants, and people keep buying essentials.

During the last shutdown in 2019, the S&P 500 actually gained 10.3%. The companies that are inside our investment portfolios aren’t affected that much by government shutdowns. It’s unfortunate that because of the political climate over the last decade, they’re willing to take the US government to the brink to get what they want politically on both sides of the aisle. As investors, we are not concerned about government shutdowns, and you shouldn’t be either.
